Host Pond Web Hosting rejects investments in fossil fuels and abuses against indigenous people

water is life nodapl

Today I have setup a new bank account with a local credit union, with the intention of migrating both my personal and business accounts to them.

I have been a happy and loyal customer of Bank of the West for 12 years now. And while I’ve been tempted to switch from them for years, I have been nervous about changing what is not broken for me, personally.

However, in light of the fact that Bank of the West’s parent company BNP Paribas is contributing to the Dakota Access Pipeline through loans and lines of credit totaling more than $444 million U.S. dollars, I believe the time to switch has arrived.

NODAPL banks investing in the pipeline

For further information about the graph above, please have a look at Food and Water Watch.

I’ve watched as peaceful protesters have been shot with rubber bullets, sprayed with pepper spray, and attack dogs allowed to bite them. All of this in the name of protecting the investments of corporations for the continued use of fossil fuels and exploitation of the planets resources.

As I have a choice and a voice, Host Pond and I will not be contributing to these things through my action or inaction anymore.

The time has come to put every ounce of our investment into renewable energy and reject with absolute clarity the further development and use of non-renewable energy.

Discontinuing my relationship of 12 years with my bank is not a comfortable or easy change, but it is the right thing to do. I hope that you will join me in migrating your accounts from any of the above listed commercial banks to a community bank or credit union that serves its members.

Sincerely,
Richard Powell

Host Pond to Build Web Hosting Server Cloud in Portland (Hillsboro) Oreogn

ViaWest Portland LogoHost Pond is proud to announce our new partnership with ViaWest that officially started on Thursday, May 1st, 2014.  Host Pond is now building a new server cloud in the Hillsboro (Portland) ViaWest facility. This action is the result of years of research and contemplation on my part. In this industry it is all but impossible to find “local” and “green” when it comes to data centers. Facilities are constantly gobbled up by larger corporations where the primary shareholders are venture capitalists in other regions often with the single minded goal of profit. So we must simply do the best that we can.

I was about as impressed with ViaWest as I could possibly expect to be. They have a local facility in Hillsboro where they have made considerable investments, and have a dedicated local staff for supporting their customers.

PGE Portland General Electric Gold StatusViaWest has a very close relationship with Portland General Electric (PGE), and enjoys Gold level partner status in their Clean Wind program. For reliability, they are connected to the PGE Sunset Reliability Center redundant power grids. ViaWest’s Hillsboro facility has so much redundant power capacity that it is configured to serve as an power source for emergency facilities such as hospitals in the event of a regional catastrophe.

Please join me in celebrating our new partnership. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with ViaWest and their Portland based support team.

Sincerely,
Richard Powell

Heartbleed bug

heartbleed10-Apr-2014 – by Richard Powell

Greetings Host Pond customers. With all the talk and hype about the Heartbleed bug, I figured it was prudent to put forth some information for Host Pond customers about the bug, and whether or not you, as a Host Pond customer need to worry about it.

First, I don’t want folks to feel that I’m downplaying the significance and impact of this bug. It is, without a doubt a serious bug and the potential risks are far reaching. Large corporations like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and banks in particular need to take action to mitigate the risk involved with this bug.

That being said, the amount of work involved for a hacker, or group of hackers to seriously take advantage of this bug is not a trivial task either. It would involve taking advantage of additional security weaknesses, and in most cases would involve the hacker having to physically place themselves (their computers) between your computer, and the website(s) you’re trying to reach. This is definitely possible, and in the case of targets like Google and Facebook, it may be worthwhile for hackers to pursue such an attack. However, in the case of your websites hosted at Host Pond, it is a much less likely scenario.

As of yesterday, April 9th, Host Pond has fully patched all of our shared hosting web servers, and confirmed that our anti-spam firewall was never vulnerable. There is nothing that Host Pond customers need to do at this point. However, if you wish to change any of the passwords associated with any of your Host Pond accounts, please feel free to do so at this time knowing that our systems have been patched.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Portland, Oregon

seoHost Pond offers several Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services to our customers.  We offer a few basic SEO services at very affordable rates because we want your business and website to succeed.  You’ll notice the non-hosting-customer price is much higher.  You could easily expect to pay that amount for these SEO services.

All new business hosting customers receive two free hours of technical support and website work. Your two hours is not used up during the migration process, as migration is also included. Once your site is up and running with Host Pond, you can use those two hours toward these SEO services.

Detailed Analysis (Step One)
The first step in optimizing your website is research.  Research your desired keywords, research your competition, research the effectiveness of your website.

During this phase, we will sit down with you in person or setup a conference call.  This initial meeting will last for approximately 1 hour.  During this meeting we will setup a few accounts (like Google Analytic’s and webmaster tools) to begin collecting information on your website traffic.  After this meeting, Host Pond will take another hour to research the likely effectiveness of your proposed keywords based on how saturated the market is for your products or services.   We may propose moving forward with your keywords, or we may suggest some alternatives for reaching a customer base for your website and/or service.  Ultimately, we will proceed with the keywords you decide upon.

Basic SEO (Step Two)
Basic SEO for your WordPress or other CMS-based website. This includes incorporating your desired keywords into all the web pages of your website. In particular, into the Title, Description, and Keywords area of all your web pages.

This is one of the most important first steps. It will enable search engines, such as google.com, to determine what your website and web pages are about. Without these basic settings, your website has little hope of being listed properly in any of the search engines.

Image Naming/Tagging (Step Three)
Renaming and describing your images.

The images on your website are another way that search engines determine what your website is about. Improperly named/titled images can hurt your ranking. This cost is based on naming/renaming up to 10 images on your website.

Permalinks and URL fixing (Step Four)
Internal links naming. We will go through up to 25 of your primary internal website links/pages and alter their URL/address so that your keywords are reflected throughout your website.

Having search-engine-friendly page addresses that contain your keywords is important so that search engines can get a better idea of what the individual pages on your website are about. This is helpful for having secondary keywords and key phrases that can be targeted on a single page of your website.

Links and Listings (Step Five)
Links and Listings. We will add your business to three of the most important directories in terms of increasing your visibility to the search engines. This includes yelp.com, maps.google.com, and merchantcircle.com.

Having external links pointing to your website from 3rd party websites is one of the best ways to increase your rankings in the search engines. At Host Pond, we have had reasonable success when adding company profiles to the three websites listed here. We have also found that, by creating a webmaster tools account and adding Google Analytics code to your website, changes made to your website are more rapidly visible on google.com
